Certificates of patents and registered trademarks can be issued electronically on or after April 1, 2024

We are pleased to announce that the Japan Patent Office (JPO) will begin issuing the following documents including certificates of patents, registered trademarks, design patents, and registered utility models electronically on or after April 1, 2024.

The following documents are currently issued in paper and mailed to the correspondence address of record (in particular, the correspondence address of IP law firm).

  • Certificate of patent, registered trademark, design patent, and utility model;
  • Receipt of annuity fees;
  • Notice of automatic payment for annuity fees;
  • Notice of registration of trademark renewal;
  • Notice of change to registered right;
  • Notice of ID number assigned to Applicant; and
  • Notice of ID number assigned to general power of attorney

We would like to inform that we will send certificates of patents, registered trademarks, etc. via email on or after April 1, 2024 when receiving them electronically from the JPO.
